Notebooking in Nature Studies

by Jimmie Lanley on August 2, 2012

Do you use notebooking for your nature studies? Most people tend to call nature notebooks nature journals. The idea is the same:  you record what you observed on your outdoor excursions or nature walks.

thehomeschoolscientist.com If you’ve ever been intimidated by nature journals, you need to read my guest post at The Homeschool Scientist titled The Minimalist Guide to Nature Notebooking. I share five easy things to put into a nature journal. Two of them are the basics and the other three are just icing on the cake.

If you like printable pages for your nature notebooks, there are several free printables  right here at The Notebooking Fairy. For your convenience, here is a list:

Snakes Notebooking Pages

Hummingbirds Notebooking Pages

Blue Jay Notebooking Pages

Owl Pellet Dissection Page

Bird Observation Chart

Mosquito Notebooking Page

Rocks and Minerals Notebooking Pages

Animal Notebooking Page

Cycles of Nature Notebooking Pages (for Northern Hemisphere at Jimmie’s Collage)

Enjoy your weekly nature walk! If you use the pages here at The Notebooking Fairy, I’d love to hear about it and see photos. Remember that I love to interview notebooking homeschool moms for Spotlight features. Just email me at pixiedust@notebookingfairy.com.

Thank you for providing these free of charge! This year – for the first time – we’ll be including Nature Study in our week beginning with a tree seasonal observation. I even bought a journal for myself (gulp). We’re enjoying an influx of hummingbirds now so I may introduce those pages before our official school start date! I loved your book, Notebooking Success, and I’ll reread it to encourage myself for the new year.

Perfect timing, thanks! We’re just wrapping up our Hard As a Rock unit study, looking at rocks we saved from the beach and recording our findings, and your pages are way nicer than the ones I have saved. Much appreciated!
