Fifty Things to Put into a Notebook: #4 Paper Dolls
Paper dolls are great for narrating after a lesson, especially for younger children. But even middle schoolers may benefit from them at certain times. An example is my 7th grader’s study of The Iliad .
Iliad Puppets
These character cards from a study of The Iliad served as simple puppets when we glued them onto craft sticks. The Iliad has a full cast of dozens of characters that are easy to confuse. Who is on what side? What god supports which hero?
Having a physical representation for each soldier and god helped us to keep track while we read. Then when the book study was over, the puppets were stored in the ancient history notebook inside a page protector.

Other children who like crafty projects may really enjoy making or coloring puppets as you read aloud. These King Lear puppets are examples. Then when the reading is over, you have perfect tools for re-enacting the story just like you were are at the theater.

Oh — we loved the character cards from the Iliad. I didn’t use them in a notebook, but my little guy loved to play with them and act out the story during read-aloud times!
