Character Sketch Notebooking Pages
Understanding the elements of fiction is a major part of a language arts curriculum. High schoolers should be able to read a novel and write an essay about a character — often called a character sketch. Younger children can begin to think about character using these free notebooking pages.
The first page is a graphic organizer where you outline the details about the character.
The fact file is for general facts about the character: age, name, family background, etc.
The physical appearance box can be used for sketching or for writing.
The bottom of the graphic organizer is for listing the character’s personality qualities and what actions demonstrate those. For a character sketch, it’s not enough to say that a character is honest, for example. You must show the character is honest by his behaviors in the novel. I’ve given room for three main qualities, just enough for the three main ideas in a paragraph or in an essay.
The graphic organizer may be enough for your purposes. Or you may want to expand the details into a writing assignment about the character, using the blank pages included in this set. (There are three line styles available.)
Are you reading a novel right now that these character pages will work nicely for? I’d love to hear about it. If you send me photos, I will feature you in a Show Off post.
